Latium is in the heart of central Italy. There are no DOCG wines in this region. Historically there were excellent wines such as Falernum produced in the hills not far from Rome. Given the fact that the volcanic soil is well-drained and well-ventilated, it should be possible to produce fine wine. Perhaps surprising is the unexciting quality of present-day Latium wines. Many feel that this problem stems from the closeness of Rome, containing huge numbers of people who will drink just about anything. Local producers focus on quantity instead of quality with very predictable results. As soon as we hear of outstanding or even excellent wines from this area we'll let you know.
