Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a tourist destination for the international jet set, but not because of its wines. Sardinia produces one DOCG wine, Vermentino di Gallura, 19 DOC wines, and several IGT wines.

Vermentino di Gallura

Vermentino di Gallura is based on the white Vermentino grape which originated in Spain and came to Sardinia a little over a century ago. In addition to the Vermentino grape this wine may contain up to 5% of other local white grapes. The grape itself is very prolific. It does best in poor soils, and the Gallura area has a very thin layer of sandy topsoil covering solid granite. Both the straw yellow dry version and the amber gold sweet version are produced in the north of Sardinia. The alcohol content varies between 12.5% and 16% depending on the version. Serve these wines ice cold when young, and at 45-49 degrees Fahrenheit (8-10 degrees Centigrade) when aged.
