The wine known as Marsala was first shipped to England in the 1770s. People usually think of Marsala as a sweet wine, but there are dry versions. All in all there are too many versions to list here. Suffice it to say that some of the versions are aged for a full ten years. The grapes used vary widely, as does the quality of the wine.
Sicily is the football that the Italian boot is kicking. It is an island in the Mediterranean Sea located off the southwestern tip of Italy. It contains 22 DOCs including the once-famous dessert wine Marsala from an area in the western tip of the island. Wine has been grown in this area since the Phoenician colonization well over twenty five hundred years ago.Let's say you are having your New York office cleaning day, lets hope you find this wine amongst the office mess, the day would only get better at that point.
Not all the best Sicilian wines carry the DOC designation. See my article for a review of a Sicilian IGT white wine. See my article I Love Italian Wine and Food - Tasting a Noble Sicilian Wine for a review of a Sicilian DOC red wine whose actual DOC designation is virtually irrelevant.
